In June of 1934, Bro. J.C. Johnson, a twenty-three year old preacher, passed through Palmer, TX everyday for two weeks to conduct a revival in another town. As he did, he felt the need for a revival in Palmer. There were two empty lots where our present church building stands. He asked the owners if he could use the land for the revival, and, so, every night for two weeks he preached, even though there was no electricity and only split logs for the seating. The first night only ten people attended, but by the end of the two weeks, thirty or more people had been saved. They then decided to establish a church there.
They (the church) acquired the land and on November 5, 1934 they laid the foundation for their first building. The people met in a building downtown, formerly known as Calloway Garage and then Palmer Fire Station. In 2009 the Palmer Fire Department was torn down and now there is parking lot beside City Hall. The church met there until their building was completed in 1935. Charter members stated that this building had no Sunday school rooms. Classes met in groups through the auditorium. No improvements were ever made on this structure.
On June 17, 1935 the first service was held with approximately fifty members present with Bro. J.C. Johnson as the first pastor. It was named Tabernacle Baptist of Palmer. In later years, the name was changed to Temple Baptist and then to its present name Fundamental Baptist. A new auditorium was built in 1944 under Bro. B.B. Garrison's pastorate and it was later torn down to make room for the present auditorium. In 1958, a nursery was added as well as the installation of water coolers. The first Vacation Bible School was also held that year under the pastoral leadership of Bro. Bigham. In 1971, under Bro. S.G. Hancock's pastoral ministry the Bus Ministry began and the first Faith Promise Mission Conference was held and this year (2009) will be the 38th Faith Promise Mission Conference.
The old tabernacle was torn down in 1968 to make room for the other buildings that have been added throughout the years. The current auditorium was dedicated in 1975 and the latest structure is the Family Life Center which was dedicated on August 22, 2004. At the present time, Fundamental Baptist Church supports 103 Missionaries and Mission Projects.
As we continue to strive toward winning souls here and around the world, we are so thankful for those who had a vision and so faithfully worked through the years to bring us where we are today. Today the church is growing under the pastoral leadership of Bro. James Smith. Our desire is to continue to be a Light House, a church who truly loves lost people.
